The Shape I'm In
One of the two best-known songs from Stage Fright, and a concert staple for the rest of the group's career. Richard Manuel sings lead on a lyric that reads, in hindsight, uncomfortably close to autobiography, a narrator worn down by bad decisions and a body that's given out on him, though at the time of writing it was understood more as a general character sketch than a personal confession. Manuel's own struggles with alcohol were already underway by 1970, and the song's exhausted, half-joking tone, wringing dark comedy out of genuine desperation, took on more weight after his death in 1986 than it seemed to carry on the record itself.
Musically the song is tighter and more urgent than most of the group's catalog, built for a driving live tempo that made it a natural set opener or high-energy midpoint in concert. Robertson wrote it, and the arrangement leans on Garth Hudson's organ and a direct, uncomplicated rock band feel that stands in contrast to the more layered arrangements on the group's first two albums.
