FAQ

Is anyone from The Band still alive? No. Richard Manuel died in 1986, Rick Danko in 1999, Levon Helm in 2012, Robbie Robertson in 2023, and Garth Hudson, the last surviving original member, in January 2025. Full detail in The Long Goodbye.

What does "The Weight" mean? There's no single fixed meaning; Robertson has said he built it for mood and image rather than a plot that resolves. The full writing story, including the Nazareth guitar stamp and the Buñuel films behind it, is on the song's own page.

Why did Robbie Robertson leave The Band? He didn't exactly leave so much as decide the group should stop touring after 1976, a decision he made largely on his own. The full explanation is on Why They Broke Up.

Who sang lead in The Band? Three different members traded lead vocals: Levon Helm, Rick Danko, and Richard Manuel. Robbie Robertson, despite writing most of the songs, sang lead on only three studio tracks in the group's entire history.

Was The Band really American? Only one member was. Levon Helm, from Turkey Scratch, Arkansas, was the sole American; Robertson, Danko, Manuel, and Hudson were all Canadian.

Did The Band ever fully reunite with all five original members? No. Robertson never rejoined after 1976, and the four who did tour together from 1983 lost Manuel in 1986 and Danko in 1999, which ended the group entirely. See Why No Original Lineup Reunion for the full story.

How did The Band get its name? It wasn't really chosen. Woodstock locals and Bob Dylan himself already called them "the band," and the name stuck once a record contract forced the issue. Full story on The Name Story.

What was The Last Waltz? The group's farewell concert, held at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving Day, 1976, filmed by Martin Scorsese and featuring guests including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, and Van Morrison. Covered in full in The Last Waltz & Breakup.

What's the difference between The Band's studio albums and live albums? This site organizes the full catalog by type under Music: ten studio albums, three live albums, the Basement Tapes, and compilations, each with its own page covering track listings and personnel.
